Former Chief of Staff to APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has officially defected to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), in a fresh political shake-up in Kano State.
Dawaki, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) barely days after losing his bid to secure the party’s return ticket through a controversial consensus arrangement.
The high-profile defection was confirmed on Monday by Saifullahi Hassan, media aide to NDC leader and Kwankwasiyya political figure, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to Hassan, Dawaki was formally welcomed into the NDC fold during a meeting held at Kwankwaso’s Miller Road residence in Kano.
“Leader [Kwankwaso] has today received the former Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Mustapha Bala Dawaki (Mai Gidan Ruwa), into the NDC Kwankwasiyya movement,” Hassan wrote on his verified Facebook page.
Dawaki’s defection is already stirring political conversations in Kano, especially as the NDC is currently finalizing consensus candidates and strategizing ahead of the next electoral cycle.
While his entry into the opposition party is seen as a major boost for the Kwankwasiyya-backed movement, uncertainty remains over whether he will be given an automatic ticket to contest his former seat on the NDC platform.
