Brazilians are mobilizing for a mass protest against Judge Alexandre de Moraes on September 7th, following his recent decision to ban Elon Musk’s social media platform, X.
The protests are set to call for Moraes’ impeachment, as demonstrators accused him of overstepping his judicial authority and violating democratic principles.
Judge Moraes, known for his stringent measures against disinformation, issued the ban after Musk’s social media network failed to comply with a directive to appoint a new legal representative.
The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has been instructed to enforce the suspension within 24 hours, with app stores given a five-day window to implement the order.
Daily fines of $8,874 will be imposed for attempts to bypass the ban using VPNs.
The conflict between Musk and Moraes intensified when the judge ordered the suspension of several accounts linked to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Musk had previously shut down X’s business operations in Brazil, citing threats to the company’s former legal representative.
The situation further escalated with the freezing of Starlink’s finances in Brazil, a satellite internet service also owned by Musk.
Reacting to the ban, Elon Musk criticized Judge Moraes, stating, “He should be impeached for violating his oath of office.”
