Brazilian influencer, model, and Mariah Carey impersonator Suellen Carey, who made international headlines last year for marrying herself, has officially divorced herself after nearly one year of solo matrimony.
On September 21, 2023, the 36-year-old became a trending topic when she shared a picture with her 433,000 Instagram followers, showing herself in a white wedding dress with a bouquet in her hands.
Her post read: “Today I value and love myself. I married myself here in London. This celebration is important because I learned to prioritize my well-being and mental health.”
Prompted by her inability to find a suitable partner, Carey was widely praised for embracing self-love in a world that often prioritized relationships. However, less than a year later, Carey admitted that the realities of being married to oneself were not without challenges.
In an exclusive interview with The Mirror on August 30, 2024, she opened up about the difficulties she faced during her solo marriage. “It’s crucial to know when to end a cycle,” Carey told The Mirror.
“Even commitment to oneself can have its challenges, such as dealing with the expectation of being perfect for yourself all the time.”
Carey revealed that despite her initial excitement, the pressure to be her perfect partner left her feeling emotionally drained. She confessed to facing feelings of loneliness and dissatisfaction in her sologamous marriage, even seeking professional help to address these issues.
“I went to couple’s therapy with myself, hoping to work through the challenges,” she explained, detailing how she attended ten sessions with a therapist.
According to Carey, she realized that her sologamous marriage was “a process of healing and self-discovery.” However, she added, “I also understood that personal growth can lead us in different directions.”
After months of self-analysis, Carey concluded that divorcing herself was necessary for her continued emotional development.
Despite the challenges, Carey insists she has no regrets about her decision to marry herself. In an Instagram post, she reflected on the lessons she learned, stating, “Self-analysis and reflection are necessary. Even in a marriage with ourselves, it’s important to accept our imperfections.”
According to her, it was essential to know when to walk away from something that no longer aided personal growth.
As of now, Carey remains in London and has expressed her openness to exploring new relationships. She recently shared a post on Instagram featuring a screenshot from Pubity, captioning it, “I need a new husband,” followed by a laughing emoji.
Suellen Carey is not the first person to engage in sologamy. In recent years, several women worldwide have chosen to marry themselves as a public act of self-love. Brazilian model Cris Galera famously married herself in 2021, only to divorce herself 90 days later after finding “someone special.” Similarly, Indian woman Kshama Bindu made headlines in 2022 as the first Indian woman to marry herself, inspired by a Netflix show, stating that she wanted to become a bride but not someone’s wife.
