Borno Youth Forum Urges Tinubu to Release Abba Kyari

The Borno State Youth Forum (BSYF) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant the unconditional release of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, who is currently on trial over alleged involvement in drug trafficking, a charge he has denied, pleading not guilty.
In an open letter on Tuesday evening and signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Ibrahim Umar, and Secretary, Alhaji Modu Bukar, the group called on the President to acknowledge what they described as Kyari’s “unmatched contributions to national security” and to reinstate him in active service for the sake of justice and national peace.
“We, the members of this forum, are appealing to you, Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to release DCP Abba Kyari unconditionally,” the letter read.
The group praised Kyari’s efforts during his time as Commander of the IGP Intelligence Response Team and his previous posting in Lagos, noting his role in combating terrorism and violent crimes across Nigeria.
According to the Forum, Kyari and his team were instrumental in ending Boko Haram suicide bombings in Borno State by arresting over 130 commanders and dismantling bomb making factories. They also credited him with arresting suspects involved in the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping.
The letter further highlighted his role in capturing several high-profile criminals, including Evans, Godogodo, Vampire, and Dogo Russia figures known for terrorizing different parts of the country.
The Forum listed a number of awards they claim Kyari received, such as three IGP Medals for Courage (2012–2014), an FBI Commendation (2018), a Presidential Medal for Courage (2016), and a National Assembly Award for Outstanding Service (2020).
“DCP Abba Kyari’s contributions to the safety of Nigerians far outweigh the allegations against him, which we believe are baseless and driven by envy,” the Forum stated.
Describing the charges as a “malicious setup,” the youth group called on President Tinubu to show compassion and leadership by ensuring Kyari’s release and return to duty.
The letter concluded: “We plead with Mr. President to release DCP Abba Kyari without conditions and restore him to his post in the interest of justice, peace, and national security.”
