Borno State Named Best Performer in National Health Project

Borno State has been recognised as the top performing state in Nigeria for the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) project.

The state outperformed all other participating states in the programme.

The IMPACT programme, funded by the World Bank, aims to reduce the death rate of children under five by half by the year 2030 by improving primary healthcare services.

The project provides combined immunisation and malaria services to vulnerable communities across 235 primary and secondary health facilities in the state.

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, received the award at the Government House in Maiduguri. He praised the Ministry of Health and the project team for their dedication and achievements.

Governor Zulum said his administration will continue to invest in the health sector to ensure better healthcare for residents.

“I commend the Health Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary, the IMPACT project coordinator, and their team for this achievement. On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, we are grateful. Healthcare is a priority for us, and we will continue to invest in the entire health sector to provide quality and affordable services,” he stated.

Speaking at the event on Sunday, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malum Gana, explained that Borno earned the top position due to its strong coordination, effective use of digital monitoring tools, and high data quality.

He noted that in the past year, the state distributed over two million malaria drugs, two million test kits, and more than 359,000 insecticide-treated nets, along with other essential medical supplies across 235 health facilities.

Professor Gana also pointed out that despite security challenges and the 2024 floods, the state successfully improved immunisation coverage in hard-to-reach areas.
