Borno State First Lady Launches 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The First Lady of Borno State, Dr. Falmata Babagana Umara Zulum, alongside the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, has kicked off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) campaign.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Tracing the Roots: Standing Against Gender-Based Violence.”

During the event on Monday, Dr. Falmata Zulum highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of GBV, including harmful cultural practices, poverty, weak legal systems, and limited access to support services.

She urged everyone government agencies, community leaders, and individuals to work together to raise awareness, strengthen legal protections, support survivors, and empower women to break the cycle of violence.

Commissioner Zuwaira Gambo emphasized the need to challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence.

She called on all stakeholders to speak out, support survivors, and help build a safer, fairer society.

Representatives from organizations such as NESCOB, BONWOC, IMC GBV, UNFPA, and OCHA also delivered goodwill messages, emphasizing the devastating effects of GBV on individuals and communities.

The event included educational activities such as quizzes, drama performances, traditional dances, and the distribution of dignity kits to students.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign held annually from November 25 to December 10, aiming to raise awareness and take action to end violence against women and girls.
