The dragnet has tightened on motorists flouting registration rules in Borno State, with the Police Command impounding 78 vehicles found operating without number plates.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Maiduguri by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso.
According to the statement, the enforcement operation, which began on June 10, 2026, is aimed at vehicles moving on public roads without registration plates, as well as those displaying concealed, altered, defaced or obscured number plates.
“The initiative is in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu,” it said.
The statement noted that all owners and operators of the affected vehicles had undergone due processing, while relevant cases had been filed before competent courts in line with existing legal provisions.
It further revealed that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, described the exercise as a forward-looking strategy to curb crime and strengthen security across the state.
“Improve intelligence gathering, and prevent criminals from exploiting unregistered vehicles for unlawful activities,” the statement said.
The command stressed that the operation was not designed to place unnecessary burdens on law-abiding residents but rather to encourage compliance with established traffic and security regulations.
Urging motorists to put their papers in order, the police called on vehicle owners to regularise their registrations and ensure approved number plates are properly displayed.
The statement added that the enforcement campaign would continue with professionalism and fairness, while reiterating the command’s resolve to safeguard lives and property throughout Borno State.
