Borno IDPs in grip of hunger, fight ants for grains

A recent investigation found that at the Muna IDP camp near Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, people are struggling to find enough food. Many men are too old or weak to work, so their wives go out to find grains.

They dig in ant holes because the ants collect grains. Sometimes the men go with their wives, but most stay at the camp. They wait for their wives to return with whatever food they could find.

These women are also gathering leaves from edible plants in the desert to try to make meals for their families.

This sad situation is happening even though the government is trying to help by giving out food.

For the past nine years, people in IDP camps have relied on the government and organizations like the WFP and INGOs for food.

Even though a considerable number of people who were forced to leave their homes have returned to areas closer to where they used to live, Borno State still has many individuals who remain displaced, meaning they are still living away from their homes because it’s not safe for them to go back yet.

Governor Zulum has been giving out food and other things to help the people, especially those living in camps or in communities where there aren’t many resources. He’s been doing this since he started his job in 2019.

Many people in Nigeria are facing tough times because the prices of food keep going up every day.

This makes it hard for them to afford the food they need to feed themselves and their families. As the cost of living rises, people find it more and more challenging to make ends meet.

This situation creates a lot of stress and worry for families who are already struggling to get by. They have to make difficult choices about what they can afford to buy, often having to sacrifice other necessities to put food on the table.

the increasing food prices in Nigeria are causing significant hardship and placing a heavy burden on many people across the country.
