Borno Group Seeks Review of Teacher Recruitment, Demands Priority for Volunteers

A group of concerned stakeholders has called on the Borno State Government to review the recently concluded teacher recruitment exercise, citing concerns over the implementation of the process and the deployment of successful applicants.
In an open letter addressed to Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the stakeholders commended the administration for its significant investment in rebuilding the state’s education sector through school construction, renovation, teacher recruitment, and other reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes.
The group, however, expressed concern that the recruitment exercise did not fully reflect earlier assurances that serving volunteer teachers would be given priority in recognition of their years of service and dedication.
According to the letter, many volunteer teachers who have served the education system for years believe they were overlooked despite possessing the required qualifications.
The stakeholders also raised concerns over the posting of many newly recruited teachers to urban schools, while several rural and underserved communities reportedly continue to face acute shortages of qualified teachers.
Describing their intervention as constructive feedback rather than criticism, the group urged the government to review the recruitment exercise to ensure deserving volunteer teachers receive the promised consideration and to reassess teacher postings to address staffing gaps in rural schools.
They further appealed to the government to address genuine complaints surrounding the exercise and continue upholding the principles of merit, equity, and transparency in future recruitment processes.
The stakeholders expressed confidence in Governor Zulum’s leadership and appealed to the administration to give thoughtful attention to the concerns, noting that equitable teacher deployment is essential to strengthening the state’s education system and sustaining ongoing reforms.
