Borno Education Commissioner Visits Schools to Review Security Measures

The Borno State Ministry of Education has intensified efforts to strengthen security in vulnerable schools following the recent abduction of 42 students in Mussa community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, conducted an assessment visit to review the security situation in schools located in vulnerable communities across Askira/Uba and Gwoza Local Government Areas.

The assessment tour began with visits to Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Dille, Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Lassa, and Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Izge.

During the visit, the commissioner held separate meetings with security personnel, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, and school administrators to assess the current security status of the affected schools and surrounding communities.

Engr. Wakilbe stressed the importance of strict compliance with protocols under the Safe School Initiative to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. He directed school authorities to strengthen collaboration with security agencies and community leaders to improve surveillance and ensure rapid response mechanisms within and around schools.

He also instructed schools to regularly conduct safety drills and sensitization programmes for students and staff, especially on evacuation procedures and emergency response strategies, to boost preparedness against security threats.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Borno State Government’s commitment to safeguarding students, teachers, and educational institutions, assuring residents of continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders to maintain safe learning environments across the state.
