Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno recently shared that his government is transforming mass transit buses into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). President Ahmed Bola Tinubu revealed 50 electric taxis acquired by the Borno government for Yankari Express Transport Company. During the presentation of the 2024 budget to the State House of Assembly, Governor Zulum mentioned that 20 diesel buses have already been converted to CNG.
He expressed plans to collaborate with NNPC, which operates a gas power plant in the state, to improve CNG supply. In addition to the transportation initiatives, Governor Zulum announced the intention to convert all street lights to solar power. These proactive steps are crucial due to the state’s location in a semi-arid zone, making it susceptible to climate change. The governor emphasized the government’s focus on environmental concerns and desertification in 2023.
The Ministry of Environment distributed over four million seedlings to combat desertification and restore vegetation. Erosion and flooding issues were addressed through drainage desilting, evacuation, and culvert construction for smooth water flow, especially during the rainy season.

Governor Zulum highlighted efforts by the State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) to maintain a balanced ecosystem. He explained that the Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene sector have seen substantial progress despite challenges. The State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) achieved infrastructure development by constructing 56 hybrid boreholes with overhead tanks, water reticulation, and taps.
RUWASSA also upgraded industrial boreholes to hybrids, reducing diesel costs and promoting environmentally friendly practices. These initiatives align with global standards, fostering sustainable water supply and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal No. 6.
