Borno CAN: No marginalization of Christians in Zulum’s govt

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State has refuted claims of marginalization by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

During a press briefing at St. Patrick Church in Maiduguri, Most Rev. Dr. John Bogna Bakeni, the CAN Chairman, emphasized the positive relationship between CAN, the Christian community, and Governor Zulum.

He clarified that a viral social media post alleging Christian marginalization was not from CAN.

Rev. Bakeni stressed that CAN, as a non-political and law-abiding association, promotes unity among Christians and advocates for a peaceful society.

He distanced the organization from violence or provocation, emphasizing the values of love, peace, and justice.

The Chairman highlighted CAN’s collaborative efforts with other religious bodies, the government, and stakeholders.

Addressing the government’s actions, Rev. Bakeni outlined areas where Governor Zulum has supported Christians, including the ongoing rehabilitation of churches, sponsorship of pilgrimages, gifts and cash donations during Christmas and Easter, and transportation support during festive seasons.

He also acknowledged the appointment of Christians in the government and efforts to recruit Christian teachers for public schools.

While acknowledging existing challenges for Christians in Borno State, Rev. Bakeni expressed CAN’s commitment to engaging in dialogue with the government to address them.

He emphasized the desire to maintain the current peace, appreciating Governor Zulum’s dedication to restoring peace and promoting development in the state.

The CAN Chairman extended gratitude to the Nigerian Armed Forces, offering prayers for those who sacrificed their lives in service to the country.

Additionally, he condoled the recent passing of Malam Isa Gusau, the CAN spokesperson.

Rev. Bakeni conveyed CAN’s support for the government’s efforts, commitment to dialogue, and determination to uphold peace in the region.
