Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State, setting parts of the local market on fire and burning a vigilante vehicle on Monday night.
A resident who spoke while hiding near the scene said flames had engulfed sections of the market.
“As I am talking to you now, the market is on fire, but I cannot confirm the details because I am currently hiding,” the source said.
Another source confirmed the attack, stating that the insurgents set a vehicle belonging to a vigilante group ablaze.
“I don’t know if the market is also affected, but it is confirmed that the terrorists burned down a vehicle belonging to the vigilante group,” the source added.
The extent of damage and possible casualties could not be immediately ascertained as residents reportedly fled the area during the attack.
Geidam, in the northern part of Yobe State, has experienced several insurgent attacks in the past.
Security agencies had yet to release an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
