In a distressing turn of events, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a targeted ambush on the security convoy accompanying Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state.
This hostile encounter, which transpired along the Jakana-Mainok expressway in Borno State, resulted in the tragic death of one police officer, with six others sustaining injuries.
The security detail had been providing protection during the governor’s journey to Maiduguri for the 24th Convocation ceremony of the University of Maiduguri.
Notably, Vice-President Kashim Shettima received an honorary doctorate degree during this event. Following the ceremony, as the convoy made its way back to Yobe, Governor Buni opted to stay in Maiduguri, preparing for a subsequent official engagement in Abuja.
Confirming the ambush, Governor Buni’s spokesperson, Mamman Mohammed, disclosed that the security personnel encountered the attackers, exchanging gunfire.
Three policemen sustained injuries during this confrontation, but the security operatives successfully repelled the assault, and the injured individuals are reportedly undergoing treatment.
A detailed account from a security source within the convoy shed light on the severity of the incident. The assailants specifically targeted the troops leading the convoy, which included a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, a Gun Truck, and another vehicle transporting police and DSS personnel.
In response, the troops retaliated with substantial firepower, compelling the terrorists to retreat. Tragically, one police officer lost his life in the line of duty, while two soldiers, a driver, three policemen, and a DSS agent sustained injuries.
The security operatives successfully made their way back to Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, ensuring a safe return.
At the same time, the wounded individuals and the driver were promptly evacuated to an undisclosed hospital to receive the necessary medical attention. Unfortunately, there is a somber note as some of the injured are said to be in critical condition, adding an element of concern to the overall situation.
