Binance works to free detained executive in Nigeria

Binance, a prominent cryptocurrency trading firm, finds itself in a complex legal situation involving the Nigerian government.
At the heart of the matter is Tigran Gambaryan, the Head of Binance’s financial crime compliance unit, who currently resides in the Kuje Correctional Centre awaiting a ruling on his bail application.
The charges against Gambaryan, brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), allege complicity in money laundering.
Adding to the legal quagmire, the Federal Government, through the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has filed a five-count charge against Binance.
Among these counts are accusations of facilitating customer tax evasion, including non-payment of Value Added Tax (VAT), failure to file tax returns, evasion of Company Income Tax (CIT), and aiding customers in evading taxes through its platform.
Additionally, the charge implicates two Binance executives, including Gambaryan, and a person identified as Nadeem Anjarwalla, who is reported to have fled.
In response to these legal proceedings, Richard Teng, the CEO of Binance, addressed the issue during the Token2049 Crypto Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Teng hinted at collaborative efforts between Binance and the Nigerian government to navigate through this challenging situation.
He emphasized that such a scenario is unprecedented for Binance, describing it as a “one-off” occurrence.
The involvement of Binance, a major player in the cryptocurrency space, in legal matters of this nature underscores the growing regulatory scrutiny faced by the industry.
As cryptocurrencies continue to gain mainstream acceptance, governments around the world are grappling with how to regulate them effectively.
In this context, the outcome of Binance’s collaboration with Nigerian authorities could have significant implications not only for the company but also for the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.
“What I can say is we are working very closely with the Nigerian authorities to try to resolve the matter. This was a one-off. It’s never happened to us before.”
