A ‘bikini bodybuilder’ who has battled eating and weight issues is launching a fitness studio to help others get fit.

Sonia Roberts – who suffers with body dysmorphia – was “dragged” down the gym five years ago by friends and was instantly addicted.

Dedicating herself to getting fit and then building muscle she became a champion ‘bikini bodybuilder’.

Now after running classes at leisure centres in Denbighshire she is due to open her own studio with a loving restoration of the Old Church Institute at Lenten Pool, Denbigh.

Sonia, 37, said: “I was quite active when I was younger but I gave up exercise in my teens.

“I was dragged back to the gym in 2011 when I was 32.

I went a couple of times and I was addicted and have never looked back.

“I have had long term hang-ups with food and been diagnosed with body dysmorphia, a disorder that causes you to have a distorted view of how you look.

“I will never be 100% happy with my body and accept that but I can appreciate what I have achieved.

“I understand how it feels to have problems with your body and eating so I appreciate what other people are going through and can help them.”

Sonia has thrived on a tough training regime, with around five visits to the gym a week and taking a similar number of fitness classes.

But she says it is the eating side that she has to battle with.

She said: “I love the exercise but like my food as well. I don’t want to be too controlling with my food, I can turn into a control freak if I am not careful. I try to eat well but I don’t obsess about this.”

Sonia said her business – Beach Body Studio – was “non-judgemental” and “welcoming” with a focus on improving health, fitness and wellbeing.

She added: “We are located in a beautiful old building that was initially built to rehabilitate and entertain soldiers returning from the First World War.

“Not only will we be offering a variety of personal training solutions, fitness classes and aerial hoop body conditioning courses I have invested in bringing Kick Start Fat Loss to Denbigh.”

She said the studio will have a personal lifestyle coach, skin specialist and sports massage therapist.

“My goal is to use my experience and knowledge along with that of my wonderful instructors and assisting therapists to bring a community together and positively impact their performance, body shape and self-confidence.”

The studio will have its opening evening on September 26 with classes starting the next day.
