Following Joe Biden’s poor performance in his debate with Donald Trump on Thursday, many US Democrats are now considering the possibility of the 81-year old US president being replaced.

Contenders to replace Biden include vice-president, Kamala Harris; Democratic governors, including California’s Gavin Newsom and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer.

However, Joe Biden told supporters on Friday at a campaign rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, “I intend to win this state in November,” to which the crowd responded, “four more years”.

Biden also acknowledged his poor performance at the debate stating:

I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious . . . I don’t debate as well as I used to.”

“But I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth . . . I know how to do this job,” he added.

According to a report by CNN, the debate had garnered 48 million TV views and 30 million streams; and though based on the Morning Consult Friday night poll, Biden had not lost ground to Trump, three in five voters surveyed thought he should be replaced as the Democrats’ candidate for president.

Responding to Biden’s poor performance on social media, US former president, Barack Obama said,

“Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself… Last night didn’t change that.”

So far, Biden team announced that the president had raised $14 million on Thursday and Friday morning – the best grassroots, or small-dollar fundraising since Biden launched his re-election bid.
