Benue State Reports 16 Snake Bites in IDP Camps, No Fatalities

In the past two weeks, 16 individuals have been bitten by snakes in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across Benue State.

These incidents occurred in three camps between late August and early September 2024.

Sir James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (Benue-SEMA), revealed this information during a press briefing in Makurdi.

Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported as all victims received prompt medical treatment.

Benue-SEMA has managed over 16 snake bite cases and has undertaken fumigation efforts in all IDP camps, including the Ikyogen refugee camp, to mitigate further incidents.

Iorpuu has called for increased medical supplies and support from both local and international partners.

The affected camps include Daudu 1 and 2 in Guma Local Government Area (LGA) and Ichuwa camp in Makurdi LGA.

Each treatment case has incurred costs exceeding N1 million.
