Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, demonstrated compassion by pardoning 12 prisoners serving various jail terms at the Nigeria Correctional Center in Makurdi on Sunday.

During his visit, the Governor also extended a state pardon to Dennis Yogbo, who had been dismissed from the state civil service approximately 28 years ago.

This pardon involved converting Yogbo’s dismissal to termination of appointment.

The decision to grant clemency was made following the recommendation of the Benue State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, led by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Barr. Fidelis Mnyim.

In his address to the released inmates, Governor Alia encouraged them to exhibit good behavior as they reintegrate into society.

He urged them to utilize the skills acquired during their time in confinement to improve their circumstances.

The Governor emphasized the importance of contributing positively to society, stating, “Give your society the very best.”

Expressing concern over the high number of young inmates, Governor Alia conveyed his disappointment, emphasizing that prisons should not be the home for young individuals.

He expressed shock at the sight of numerous young faces among the 525 inmates, including 25 females, one with a baby, highlighting the need for a different path for these individuals.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Barr. Fidelis Mnyim, shared insights into the thorough process undertaken by the 8-man Committee in recommending individuals for pardon.

The committee worked in accordance with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, considering the offenses committed against the state.

The released inmates were selected from Makurdi, Otukpo, and Gboko correctional facilities, as disclosed by Barr. Fidelis Mnyim.

Responding on behalf of the released inmates, Barnabas Apavv conveyed gratitude to Governor Alia and pledged their commitment to good behavior as they rejoin society.

Dennis Yogbo, who received a state pardon, expressed relief after 28 years of seeking a solution to his situation.

He credited the Governor for coming to his rescue, following the council’s recommendation, which led to the conversion of his dismissal to termination of appointment.
