Benue State Emergency Management Agency Distributes Relief Items to IDPs

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has distributed both food and non-food items to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Benue State for the month of May.
The distribution event took place at the SEMA secretariat in Makurdi on Wednesday.
During the event, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Sir James Iorpuu, emphasized the commitment of Governor Hyacinth Alia to alleviating the suffering of those displaced from their homes. These individuals are currently living in various IDP camps across Benue State.
Iorpuu expressed gratitude to United Nations agencies for their ongoing support and significant contributions toward improving the living conditions of the IDPs.
He gave special recognition to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for its critical role in deploying seven key sectors within the state.
“These sectors include camp coordination and management, shelter and non-food items, livelihood support, water and sanitation, and transitional recovery efforts.”
Iorpuu noted that these efforts have been vital in ensuring that IDPs receive the necessary assistance and support.
Additionally, Iorpuu extended thanks to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and Plan International.
He acknowledged their continuous support and resources, which have significantly impacted the multifaceted challenges faced by the IDPs.
He highlighted their contributions in providing essential services, enhancing protection, and promoting sustainable development.
Iorpuu assured the IDPs that their needs are a top priority for Benue-SEMA. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to working tirelessly to secure the resources and support needed to improve their living conditions and facilitate their eventual return to their ancestral homes.
The items distributed to the IDPs included, 2,440 bags of 25kg rice, 729 bags of beans, 160 bags of garri- 1,520 cartons of noodles – 175 gallons of groundnut oil- 157 gallons of red oil- 905 cartons of Maggi seasoning- 185 bags of salt- 60 bags of sugar
Iorpuu also commended the SEMA staff for their dedication and support, which he described as the pillars of their humanitarian efforts.
He encouraged them to continue their hard work to overcome challenges and create a brighter future for all displaced persons in the state.
This distribution effort reflects a strong collaborative effort between the state government and international organizations to support those in need, ensuring that the IDPs receive vital supplies and assistance during their displacement.
