Less than a month after their inauguration, lawmakers in the Benue State House of Assembly engaged in a physical combat over the choice of principal officers.
The fight was between lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress and those from the People’s Democratic Party in an assembly where the two parties are almost evenly matched.
The APC had sent a letter to the speaker seeking to appoint majority leader for the Assembly.
In terms of numbers, the APC claims to be in a majority because a PDP member elected on that party’s platform defected. But the PDP members are asking that the seat of the defecting lawmaker be declared vacant.
The said lawmaker, Mr Nick Eworo, hinged his defection on his expulsion from the PDP at the local government level. Interestingly, Eworo was presented as deputy majority leader by the APC.
The APC nominated the member representing Makurdi South State Constituency, Mr. Benjamin Adanyi, as Majority Leader; Nick Eworo, representing Obi State Constituency as Deputy Majority Leader while the member representing, Vandeikya, Titus Uba, as Chief Whip of the House.
The PDP lawmakers quickly arrested the reading of the letter via a motion to declare the seat of Mr Eworo vacant in line with Section 190 of the 1999 constitution.
