Benin Monarch Sets Igue in Motion with Sacred Ugierhoba Rite

The Oba of Benin, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, on Monday carried out the age-old Ugierhoba rite, officially signalling the commencement of the 2025 Igue festival.

The News Chronicle gathered that the sacred observance was held at the revered Ugharhoba section of the Benin Palace, reflecting the enduring link between ancestral customs and present-day Benin traditions.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Ugierhoba refers to holy ancestral shrines dedicated to the forebears of Oba Ewuare, which are honoured during the Igue festival, also known as “Ugie”.

During the ritual at Ugierhoba, the monarch engaged in quiet reflection, offering prayers alongside intercessory groups for divine direction, spiritual renewal, the wellbeing of his household, the prosperity of the kingdom and the peace of Nigeria.

Activities commenced with a dignified procession after the Oba first paid homage to past royal ancestors at Ugha-Ozolua, in strict observance of long-established traditional practices.

Traditional chiefs including Ihogbe, Ehondor, Ifiento, Ewaise and others presented their stewardship reports, while prescribed ritual animal sacrifices were carried out in line with custom.

Iguobaro said, “The rite binds past and present, renewing spiritual bonds that sustain Benin’s heritage.”

Accompanied by his children and members of the royal household, the Oba’s stately appearance stirred palace supporters, as his commanding presence heightened the tempo of the traditional musical ensemble.
