Bauchi assembly speaker and deputy resign

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Babayo Akuyam and Ahmed Abdullahi, have decided to resign from their positions.

Mr. Akuyam, who represents the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Hardawa State Constituency, and Mr. Abdullahi, who represents the PDP in the Dass State Constituency, made this announcement during a meeting on Wednesday.

Their decision aims to help reinstate the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, and his deputy, Jamilu Dahiru, to their previous roles.

This decision comes after the Court of Appeal in Abuja nullified the elections of Mr. Suleiman and Mr. Dahiru in November 2023. The court ordered a re-run of the elections in the constituencies on March 11, 2023.

In the recent re-run elections held on February 3 and February 4, 2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mr. Suleiman and Mr. Dahiru as the winners.

Explaining their decision to step down, outgoing Speaker Akuyam said it was part of an agreement among the lawmakers to ensure the return of Mr. Suleiman and Mr. Dahiru to their positions.

He thanked the legislators and the House’s staff for their support and cooperation during their tenure.

Mr. Akuyam also praised the outgoing Speaker and his deputy for fulfilling their commitment.

He assured the assembly of his dedication to creating effective legislation for the betterment of the constituents’ lives.
