Bauchi APC Crisis Deepens as Tuggar Loyalists Threaten to Quit Party

Tensions are escalating within the Bauchi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as supporters of former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, threaten to leave the party over alleged plans to impose a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The controversy follows growing speculation that former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, may emerge as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate, sparking backlash among loyalists of Tuggar.
Speaking in an interview with Newsmen, the Director of Media for the Tuggar Foundation, Ibrahim Malam, warned that supporters of the former minister may reconsider their place in the party if internal democracy is allegedly undermined.
Malam clarified that his remarks represented the views of Tuggar’s supporters and not an official position of the former minister.
According to him, the group strongly opposes any move to replace open competition with a consensus arrangement.
“Regarding this narration of somebody becoming the APC flag bearer who is not competent, somebody who lost an election, we can’t remain in the party where democracy is not practised,” he said.
He added that consultations were ongoing among supporters, stressing that defection remained an option if their grievances were ignored.
The development signals widening cracks within the Bauchi APC as rival camps intensify political manoeuvring and negotiations ahead of the party’s governorship primaries.
“We reject this imposition, and I don’t think any one of us is going to support anybody if that happens,” he said.
Meanwhile, the APC leadership in Bauchi State has yet to officially respond to the allegations or mounting discontent among party stakeholders.
