In Kankara Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, it has been reported that bandits took the lives of five individuals in two polling units, casting a shadow over the scheduled rerun election on Saturday.

The attackers, arriving on more than 50 motorcycles, not only claimed lives but also engaged in looting, making off with over 100 bags of guinea corn, cowpea, and soybeans from the Ungwar Kela community during a late-night assault on Friday.

According to local sources, the criminals executed their plan with some members strategically positioned to guard the area, while others transported the stolen produce on motorcycles throughout the night.

Unfortunately, attempts to get information from the Katsina Police Command spokesperson proved futile, as calls went unanswered. Similarly, efforts to reach the local government chairman, Alhaji Anas Isah, were unsuccessful.

This unfortunate incident has raised serious security concerns for the rerun election, which was originally slated for 20 polling units across Kankara and Sabuwa LGAs.

Mr. Shehu Sa’idu, the INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity, emphasized that the election encompasses four units in Dauduwa, Faskari, and 16 in the Garagi ward of Kankara LGA.

The safety of the electoral process is now under scrutiny because of troubling events that occurred leading up to this crucial event.
