Armed bandits have reportedly abducted several internally displaced persons (IDPs) during a fresh attack in Sokoto State, raising renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria’s North-West.
According to residents, the victims who had previously fled their communities due to persistent bandit attacks were seized when heavily armed attackers stormed the area unexpectedly. The raid forced many people to flee for safety, while several others were taken into the surrounding forest.
The exact number of those abducted had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has heightened fears over the safety of displaced persons living in temporary settlements, with security experts warning that many IDPs remain vulnerable due to inadequate protection.
Local sources expressed frustration over the repeated attacks and called on security agencies to intensify operations in affected communities to secure the release of the abducted victims.
Community leaders also appealed to the federal and Sokoto State governments to strengthen security around camps and settlements housing internally displaced persons.
As of the time of this report, authorities had yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the attack. Security operatives were reportedly assessing the situation and continuing efforts to track down the attackers and rescue the victims.
