Bandits Claim 26 Lives in Benue Conflict

Benue Guber
At least 26 individuals, including six security personnel, lost their lives in renewed attacks on three separate communities within the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
The assaults unfolded over several days, beginning on Saturday and persisting until Monday.
Reports from natives in the affected areas revealed the grim toll: six security operatives accompanying a bereaved family were ambushed and killed while escorting them for a burial ceremony in Mbakunwande.
Subsequent attacks claimed the lives of 14 individuals in Jaora on Sunday, followed by another six casualties along the Naka/Adoka road on Monday.
Henry Agba, Chairman of the Gwer West LGA, conveyed the severity of the situation to reporters, confirming the death toll and highlighting the injuries sustained by numerous others.
He recounted how the attacks unfolded, with armed assailants targeting communities and inflicting devastation.
The local authorities promptly notified law enforcement agencies, with the Police and State Security Adviser Joseph Har being briefed on the incidents.
The gravity of the situation prompted a visit from the State Governor’s Special Adviser on External Affairs, retired Col. Alexis Ashungu, who confirmed the tragic loss of 16 lives.
While the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, acknowledged the attacks, she indicated that comprehensive information would be forthcoming following the Police Commissioner’s assessment of the affected areas.
The incidents underscored the urgent need for security measures and intervention to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further bloodshed.
