Bandit Leader Bello Turji Sighting With Powerful Chinese-Made Weapon Sparks Concern

A photograph circulating on social media, purportedly showing notorious bandit leader Bello Turji carrying a powerful weapon, has sparked concerns over the proliferation of sophisticated firearms among criminal groups in Nigeria.
Reports circulating online claim that the weapon seen in the photograph resembles the NORINCO LG5/QLU-11, a Chinese-made grenade launcher reportedly designed to fire 35mm/40mm ammunition.
Some online reports have also claimed that the weapon could cost between $15,000 and $20,000 per unit. However, the reported price has not been independently verified and should not be regarded as an established market price.
The authenticity of the photograph and the exact identity of the weapon remain unconfirmed.

If the weapon is eventually confirmed to be of the type being reported, its alleged possession by a bandit leader would raise serious questions about how sophisticated weapons are reaching criminal groups operating in Nigeria.
Communities affected by banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity are likely to view such reports with concern, particularly amid growing fears over criminals gaining access to more powerful weapons.
The development also raises a key security question: Where are such weapons coming from, and through what channels are they reaching bandits and other criminal groups?
Security experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of identifying arms-trafficking routes and blocking the channels through which illegal weapons reach criminal organisations.
Authorities are therefore expected to provide further clarification on the photograph, establish the exact type of weapon shown and determine how it may have come into the possession of the individual alleged to be Bello Turji, if the claim is found to be genuine.
