Bad governance not responsible for Naira collapse – Tinubu’s defender, Omokri

Renowned author and socio-political commentator Reno Omokri has delivered a scathing critique of Nigerians’ response to the plummeting value of the Naira against the Dollar. In a no-holds-barred statement, Omokri condemned what he referred to as “shenanigans” employed by Nigerians to express their dissatisfaction with the currency exchange rate.

“Enough with the jokes, protests, and mockery of politicians,” Omokri declared. “To what avail have these antics improved our currency’s value?”

With a currency exchange rate of ₦1700 to the Dollar, Omokri emphasized that Nigeria’s Naira is now subject to market forces, no longer artificially propped up by unsustainable expenditures. He pointed out that Nigeria has ceased spending exorbitant sums, such as $1.5 billion monthly, to artificially inflate the Naira’s value.

Omokri did not mince words in addressing Nigerians’ spending habits, urging citizens to alter their consumption patterns to bolster the Naira’s worth. He specifically called attention to the substantial sums sent abroad daily through telecommunications companies like MTN, Airtel, and DSTV, urging citizens to opt for local alternatives.

His recommendations included supporting indigenous brands like Innoson, Glo, Dangote, Nasco, and embracing local goods and services, from zobo drinks to traditional attire. Omokri stressed the importance of patronizing Nigerian businesses, sports teams, and cultural institutions to stimulate economic growth and shore up the Naira.

In his closing remarks, Omokri issued a stark ultimatum, emphasizing that the only viable solution to currency appreciation lies in a concerted effort to #GrowNairaBuyNaija. He urged Nigerians to heed his call and take decisive action to safeguard the nation’s economy and financial stability.
