Babachir Accuses Tinubu of Betrayal Over VP Choice

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of picking Vice President Kashim Shettima behind his back—despite what he described as a prior understanding.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Insight Sources monitored by The News Chronicle, Lawal criticized the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket that propelled Tinubu to power, calling it a misstep that betrayed trust and national unity.

Turning his focus to 2027, Lawal threw his weight behind the emerging opposition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the coalition is determined to put national interest first.

He added that zoning wouldn’t matter as long as the party fields a strong candidate capable of defeating Tinubu.

“This administration has brought nothing but suffering,” he said. “If I were part of it, one of three things would’ve happened: I’d have resigned, been sacked, or died.”

Lawal’s remarks hint at deepening cracks within the ruling class and a potentially seismic shift ahead of the next election.
