LAGOS – In 1947, thirteen years before independence, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, aged 38, published “Path to Nigerian Freedom.” It was not politics. It was prophecy.
His thesis was clear: Nigeria would stand or fall on 2 pillars — Mass Education and Deliberate Economic Planning. Without them, he warned, we would get “freedom in name only” and a harvest of __“tribalism, corruption, and chaos.”_
78 years later, the prophecy is now our headline.
THE PROPHECY
From Calabar Prison in 1966, Awolowo wrote: “A nation of illiterates cannot have a stable government. Ignorance breeds insecurity, and insecurity will consume us all.”
On the economy: “Without deliberate planning, we shall have poverty where there should be prosperity, unemployment where there should be work.”
His most damning line: “When a man is ignorant and hungry, he becomes desperate. Desperation breeds crime.”
THE WARNING IGNORED
As Premier, Awolowo delivered free education because “no nation can rise above the level of its education.” He was called “utopian, socialist, impossible.”
Others chose handouts over schools. The result? Awolowo’s feared “insecure federation.” We are living in it.
THE 70-YEAR DEBT
2026 proves the math:
- Ignorance: 70%+ of out-of-school children. Literacy below 40% in some states. A time bomb now detonating.
- Economic Downturn: No planning. Oil dependence. Idle youth.
- Insecurity: The same profile Awolowo described in 1947.
FROM BLAME TO BUILDING
This is not about 2023.
This is about 1947.
The question is not who to blame.
The question is what to build.
- CONSCIENCE – Own our failure since 1947
- COMPETENCE – Fund schools, skills, and planning
- CHARACTER – Nation first. Future first.
Awolowo gave the blueprint. The 3Cs give the discipline.
“If you keep a man ignorant, you enslave him and endanger the whole society.”
Let us finish the work.
