Australia Tightens Visa Rules for International Students as Enrolment Surges

—

Stricter visa requirements have been put in place by the Australian government in an effort to control the calibre of foreign students and prevent visa abuse.

TravelBiz reports that more students are selecting Australian universities, leading to an increase in the number of foreign students enrolled in Australian universities.

780,104 international students were enrolled as of April 2024, according to research from International Education Data, a 16% increase from the same period in 2019.

Recent modifications to visa regulations

According to TravelBiz, the Australian government updated its policies regarding student visas in order to more effectively control the influx of foreign students.

While introducing harsher criteria, these reforms also aim to improve the overall student experience.

The raising of the bar for English competence is one significant shift. To enable students to fully participate in their education and daily lives, Australia has increased the English language proficiency standards for those applying for student visas.

On exams such as the PTE, TOEFL, or IELTS, lower minimum scores were previously considered acceptable. The new criteria indicates a stronger mastery of English by requiring higher minimum scores.

Although the goal of this modification is to aid students in assimilating more easily into the academic setting, non-native English speakers may have difficulties.

Financial requirements

To guarantee that overseas students have enough money for their stay, the Australian government has increased its criteria for financial documentation.

In the past, less evidence of ability to pay for tuition and living expenses was needed. An increase in proof of money, covering living expenses, tuition, and travel expenditures, is required under the new criterion.

Additionally, Australia has implemented measures to prevent unauthorised students from entering the nation. The purpose of these new regulations is to safeguard the integrity of the student visa program.

Furthermore, the cost of applying for a visa has gone up. From about AUD 630, the new cost is AUD 1,600. According to reports from Enjoy Your Travel, the cost of applying for an Australian visitor visa was AUD 140 (about 51,000 Naira) in the previous year.

Moreover, graduates 35 years of age and younger are the only ones eligible for temporary graduate visas. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria, which mandates comprehensive personal statements and proof of intention to return home, replaced the two-year extension for temporary graduate visas.

Stricter compliance standards and ongoing audits of educational institutions are two other new regulations. With new incentives like scholarships, waived fees, and accelerated visa processing for sectors like health and education, there is more support for high-need areas.

What to note

Students should apply as soon as possible to manage paperwork requirements and potential complications as they relate to these new laws.

Along with improving their English language skills through accredited examinations, they must also demonstrate that they have the money to pay for their education and living expenses.

Australia is still a popular country for overseas students, and being aware of these developments might help students succeed academically there.
