ASUU Prepares for Potential Strike as Government Fails to Honor Agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may soon embark on an industrial action Nationwide.
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the President of ASUU, confirmed the likelihood of a strike to newsmen on Thursday.
He mentioned that the union is currently mobilizing its members in preparation for potential industrial action.
Professor Osodeke expressed concern that the government has neither signed an agreement with the union nor fulfilled its own commitments in previously negotiated agreements.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the union is expected to meet soon to decide whether to proceed with a strike and determine its timing.
“We are mobilizing our members currently as we may possibly embark on strike action, but we will meet soon to determine that,” Osodeke said. “The government has failed to listen to our plights. They even failed to honor agreements or sign newly reached agreements. Since the rumor of the strike action broke out, no one has reached out to us.”
The union has been at odds with the government over an agreement reached in 2009, which has undergone various forms of negotiations without resolution.
In October 2022, ASUU initiated a strike action that lasted eight months. In a statement by President Osodeke, ASUU noted that the decision to call off the strike followed numerous appeals by Nigerians, then-President Muhammadu Buhari, and then-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
“While appreciating the commendable efforts of the leadership of the House of Representatives and other patriotic Nigerians who waded into the matter, NEC noted with regret that the issues in dispute are yet to be satisfactorily addressed,” the statement added.
