Assault On Uber Driver, Another Pointer to Flagrant Abuse of Power by Political Class – RULAAC

—

The trending incident involving Federal Lawmaker Alex Ikwecheghi, allegedly assaulting an Uber driver, highlights a troubling abuse of power and lack of respect for basic human dignity, rights group, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, RULAAC has said.

On Sunday, the video trended, where the lawmaker insulted the driver, boasting that he could make him disappear.

The lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly had claimed the driver disrespected him by not bringing his delivery into his house and refused to pay.

He also threatened that he could make the driver disappear and no one could do anything about it.

He even boasted that if he dealt with the driver, not even the Inspector General of Police could touch him.

Reacting to the video, the Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma said the incident was worrisome.

According to him, it reinforces the concerns the Civil Society and other meaning citizens have raised over the intimidation and humiliation the common man suffers in the hands of the affluent and the political class.

“The attention of RULAAC has been drawn to the reported incident involving Federal Lawmaker Alex Ikwecheghi, allegedly assaulting an Uber driver.

“The incident highlights a troubling abuse of power and lack of respect for basic human dignity. The video showing him physically attacking the driver over a perceived slight is deeply concerning and reflects a broader issue of impunity among those in positions of authority,” he said.

Nwanguma, while describing such behavior by a Federal Lawmaker as unacceptable, said it underscores the need for accountability.

The RULAAC boss called on the relevant authorities to investigate the matter and prevent such abuse from reoccurring.

He said, “The Senate leadership and the Inspector-General of Police should take immediate action to address this incident.

“Ensuring that lawmakers are held accountable for their actions is crucial in fostering a culture of respect and responsibility, as well as restoring public trust in the political system.”
