“I appreciate that they Nominated Me, But i was not taking it serious” – Asake bears it all on losing the Grammy and his rise to stardom featured in The GQ magazine
In the latest edition of GQ Magazine, Asake, famously known as “Mr. Money With The Vibe,” brings his signature creativity and flair to the pages of the April/May 2024 issue. This Afrobeats sensation shot to stardom in 2020 with his hit track “Lady” and has been on a meteoric rise ever since. With chart-toppers like “Mr Money” and “Omo Ope” featuring Olamide, as well as two successful studio albums under his belt, Asake has solidified his place in the music industry. His albums, “Mr Money With The Vibe” in 2022 and “Work Of Art” in 2023, both soared to the top half of the Billboard 200, earning him accolades and his first Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance with “Amapiano” featuring Olamide.
But success didn’t come overnight for Asake. He’s quick to point out, “You have to understand: I got there in two years, but I’ve been working for years. People are counting the days you’re successful. They don’t count the days you’ve been working toward it.”
In his interview with GQ, Asake delves into his music style and the continuous quest for growth. “My music is just me,” he explains. “It’s not something I can really explain. The thing is, I feel like the kind of music I listened to while growing up shapes who I am.”
Asake’s debut album, “Mr Money,” showcased his desire for the high life, while his follow-up, “Work of Art,” aimed to reveal more layers of his personality. “People don’t really know me because I’m quiet,” he admits. “So everybody started seeing me as a mystery. ‘Work of Art’ is just for them to know me. You have to understand I’m human, but you can’t just deny the heart in me.”
When it comes to his future musical endeavors, Asake remains open-minded. “I’ll never limit myself on one thing,” he asserts. “I might wake up tomorrow and tell you I want to do an all reggae album. Maybe that’s where God just directs me to.”
Despite not clinching a Grammy Award this time around, Asake maintains a positive outlook. “It’s not a loss for me,” he reflects. “I might just get more next year. But in my head, I was not even taking it too seriously. I appreciate the fact that they nominated me—I won’t lie, that’s a lot to me. Even me, I didn’t see that coming this soon. I’m relaxed about it. Maybe because I know there will be a day that win will come.”
