Army Chief Pledges Stronger Military Action Against Insecurity

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to tackling terrorism, banditry, and other security threats across the country through improved professionalism, operational effectiveness, and stronger collaboration among security agencies.

Speaking on Monday at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff First Bi Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja, Shaibu said the Army remained determined to defeat criminal elements despite operational setbacks in some areas.

The conference, held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, brought together senior military officers, formation commanders, heads of military institutions, regimental sergeant majors, and representatives of other security agencies to review security challenges and operational strategies.

Shaibu noted that the Nigerian Army had recorded significant successes in operations across the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions, praising troops for their courage and resilience in counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations.

“Our journey has not been without setbacks, but the Nigerian Army remains resolute and committed to addressing all security challenges confronting our dear nation,” he said.

He stressed the need for innovative approaches and stronger inter agency cooperation to tackle evolving security threats, adding that the conference would assess ongoing operations and develop practical strategies to strengthen military effectiveness.

The COAS also reiterated his vision of transforming the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force capable of effectively carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

Shaibu further assured troops of continued support through improved logistics, realistic training, and enhanced welfare initiatives while urging officers and soldiers to uphold discipline, professionalism, and adherence to rules of engagement.
