Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Borno Deputy Governor Pledges N50m to Nigeria Legion

The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Dr Umar Kadafur, has pledged the sum of N50 million to the Borno State chapter of the Nigeria Legion during the wreath-laying ceremony and launch of the Emblem Appeal Week marking the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026.

The event was held on Thursday at Ramat Square, Maiduguri, and brought together government officials, military personnel, veterans, and members of the public to honour fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

In his address, Dr Kadafur described the occasion as solemn and patriotic, noting that it was set aside to remember, honour, and celebrate the bravery, patriotism, and ultimate sacrifice of gallant men and women who laid down their lives in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

He said the peace and freedom enjoyed by Nigerians today were earned through courage, resilience, and selfless service, adding that the sacrifices of fallen heroes remain timeless symbols of national service and love for the country.

The Acting Governor stressed that remembrance goes beyond those who died on the battlefield to include veterans who returned with scars of war, as well as widows, children, and families who continue to bear the burden of loss.

Dr Kadafur further explained that the Emblem Appeal Week is more than a ceremonial exercise, describing it as a call to collective responsibility and tangible support for ex-servicemen, widows, and dependants of fallen heroes.

He assured that the Borno State Government would continue to prioritise security, peace, and the welfare of serving and retired military personnel.

“As we wear the emblem, let it remind us of sacrifice, courage, and duty, and inspire us to uphold unity, justice, patriotism, and selfless service,” he said, while praying for the repose of the souls of fallen heroes and comfort for their families.

In his vote of thanks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Borno State chapter, Major A.M. Tijani (Rtd), highlighted the numerous forms of support the state government has extended to the Legion and bereaved families over the years.

Major Tijani expressed gratitude on behalf of members of the Legion for the N50 million donation and other contributions made during the Armed Forces Celebration Day and the launch of the Emblem Appeal Week 2026, describing the gesture as a morale booster for veterans and their families.
