Ara’s Journey as Africa’s First Female Talking Drummer

Ara, the famous talking drummer and cultural ambassador of the Ooni of Ife, shared her story about overcoming discouragement from playing the talking drum.

As Africa’s first female talking drummer, Ara revealed that people warned her that playing the talking drum could prevent her from having children. Despite these warnings, she persevered.

Speaking on the ‘Terms And Conditions’ podcast, Ara explained, “There are some drums that females are traditionally not allowed to play. I began with traditional drums and over the years, I learned to play various instruments like the bass guitar, keyboard, and drum set.

However, I wanted something unique, so I decided to learn the talking drum. Many people were hesitant to teach me because I am a woman, so I taught myself.”

She added, “At one point, I was afraid because people said I might not be able to have children. It was a traditional belief, but I overcame that.”

Ara has a son with her estranged husband, Prince Nurudeen Olalekan Saliu.
