Apple Overtakes Samsung as Top Smartphone Manufacturer in 2023
Apple has dethroned Samsung to claim the title of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer in 2023, according to data released by IDC. Despite a 3.2% year-over-year decline in global smartphone shipments, the industry shows signs of recovery in the second half of 2023. The fourth quarter of 2023 saw an 8.5% YoY growth, surpassing forecasts with a remarkable 326.1 million shipments.
However, the full-year volume hit a decade-low, attributed to macroeconomic challenges and elevated inventory early in the year. Apple emerged victorious with an all-time high market share of 20.1%, shipping 234.6 million smartphones. Samsung trailed closely with 226.6 million units and a 19.4% market share, while Xiaomi secured the third position with 145.9 million shipments and a 12.5% market share.
This marks the first time since 2010 that a company other than Samsung led the smartphone market, and it’s Apple’s inaugural reign at the top. The Cupertino giant’s success is credited to its premium devices, constituting over 20% of the market, fueled by enticing trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans.
Despite facing increased regulatory challenges and competition from Huawei in China, Apple has managed to maintain its success. The smartphone market is undergoing fierce competition, with Huawei staging a comeback and other brands like OnePlus, Honor, and Google diversifying the Android landscape.
Discussions surrounding foldable phones and a heightened emphasis on AI capabilities in smartphones are gaining traction, signaling an intriguing era for the smartphone industry. According to Ryan Reith, IDC’s group vice president, the market is heading towards an interesting time as innovation and competition continue to shape its landscape.
