The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Zakari Mohammed said that there would be sweeping changes in the House leadership as lawmakers resume.
According to him, the sweeping changes would affect the positions of the Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip. Obviously the positions of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker would be untouched for the positions are subject to the constitution.
Speaking about the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House, Mohammed said, “The speakership and deputy speakership are constitutional positions. You don’t necessarily have to be in the majority to be Speaker in the House”.
The changes in the House leadership are compelled by the defection of 37 Peoples Democratic Party members of the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress.
As a matter of fact, more PDP lawmakers are set to defect to the APC this week. The APC which has a slim advantage over the PDP in the House wants to wrest control from its rival and stamp its mark of authority on the House, hence its need to change the House leadership.
