President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not intend to impose a one-party state, stressing that democracy thrives on credible opposition and healthy political competition.
Speaking at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja on Friday, Tinubu said the gathering marked “a defining chapter” in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He emphasized unity as the foundation for progress and urged party members to remain committed to the ideals that shaped the APC.
The President paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as the party’s first elected leader, and called for continued dedication to discipline and collective interest within the party.
Tinubu reiterated that the APC welcomes constructive criticism, noting that a credible opposition strengthens governance. He defended the Electoral Act 2026, saying it emerged from a rigorous legislative process in line with constitutional provisions and aimed at improving Nigeria’s electoral system.
On governance, Tinubu highlighted reforms under his Renewed Hope Agenda, acknowledging that economic adjustments have been difficult but necessary. He said Nigeria has recorded improvements in infrastructure development, fiscal reforms, investor confidence, and declining inflation.
The President also cited growth in foreign exchange buffers, stock market performance, and increased investor confidence in the oil and gas sector. He added that Nigeria’s recent Eurobond issuance was oversubscribed and that the country had exited the Financial Action Task Force grey list.
Tinubu admitted challenges in the power sector and announced plans to establish a Grid Asset Management Company to boost electricity supply and strengthen transmission infrastructure.
He called on youths and women to play stronger roles in governance, describing them as essential to Nigeria’s future. Tinubu urged party members to maintain unity after the convention and tasked newly elected officials to lead with integrity and fairness.
“Let no contest divide us. At the end of this convention, our party must be the victor,” he said, while reaffirming commitment to democratic principles and national development.
