APC Defections Driven by Self-Preservation, Not Service— Okonkwo

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has criticised the wave of governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress, describing the moves as calculated attempts to secure personal political survival rather than serve the public interest.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Monday monitored by The News Chronicle, Okonkwo argued that many defections are driven by fear of political uncertainty, not ideological alignment.

He maintained that opposition parties have consistently offered what he called constructive and patriotic criticism, but alleged that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has remained unresponsive.

According to him, the growing trend of political cross-carpeting risks weakening democratic accountability by concentrating power around the ruling party while sidelining dissenting voices.

Okonkwo warned that democracy thrives on a vibrant opposition, stressing that attempts to stifle criticism could erode public trust and deepen political apathy among Nigerians.
