A man posing as a staff member of the Nasarawa State Ministry of Justice, Mahmoud Abdullahi, has been arrested for allegedly stealing an iPhone 17 Pro Max belonging to Wale Ajetunmobi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Ajetunmobi disclosed the incident on his X page, revealing that the theft occurred amid heavy congestion at the VVIP entrance during the just-concluded 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Eagle Square, Abuja.
According to him, multiple security checkpoints and the influx of unaccredited individuals created chaos at the final screening point a moment he said the suspect exploited to pick his phone.
Using tracking technology, the device was first located in Wuse Zone 6 before moving to Karu, on Abuja’s outskirts a trail that triggered a swift police response.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, led by Assistant Superintendent Isah Mohammed, tracked the signal to a roadside car lot near Karu Bridge, where a group of convention attendees had stopped due to a vehicle fault.
Ajetunmobi recounted that the group consented to a search after being briefed by police. Suspicion fell on one member who became visibly uneasy during the screening.
“Suddenly, my iPhone slipped out of Mahmoud Abdullahi’s trousers,” he said, adding that the device, initially switched off due to low battery, was powered on and confirmed with his passcode.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody.
Ajetunmobi commended the police for their swift and professional handling of the case, noting that their prompt action ensured the recovery of the stolen device.
