Anyaehie becomes 7th UNIZIK substantive VC, vows to leave a legacy

Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie has emerged as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The appointment was announced on Sunday, following its approval by the university’s Governing Council for a single tenure of five years.

The appointment is effective from November 19, 2025.

Professor Anyaehie, a renowned professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurements, was appointed by the Pro-chancellor and Chairman, Barr. Monsur Kukoyi Olugbenga.

He will take over from Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, who has been serving as the Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Speaking immediately after he was announced, Prof Anyaehie expressed delight at the appointment, noting that he had always wanted the Nigerian universities to be better and the appointment was an opportunity for him to make the system better.

He promised that in the next 6 months of his administration, he will devote efforts towards ensuring that the university emerges among the first 10 in Nigeria.

“Fortunately, I feel aligned with this unity because the great Zik funded my university education at the University of Nigeria Nsukka.

“I want to pledge that I will get to work immediately and we are willing to accept any good counsel. We will also work with the Governing Council to ensure that we achieve our vision for the transformation of this citadel of learning,” he pledged.
The appointment brings to an end, a long tussle for the university’s helmsman, which had seen the acting Vice Chancellor, Umobi, appointed a second time due to failure to resolve outstanding disagreements.
