Youths in Gwashi community, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State, have reportedly confronted Deputy Governor Mani Malam Mummuni and his entourage before chasing them away during a visit to sympathise with residents affected by bandit attacks.
The incident reportedly occurred during the deputy governor’s visit to the community to commiserate with victims of the attacks and offer support amid persistent insecurity in the area.
Security analyst Bakatsine disclosed the development in a post on his official X account on Monday, stating that the visit was disrupted when angry youths confronted the government delegation.
According to the report obtained by The News Chronicle, the youths expressed frustration over repeated attacks on their community and neighbouring settlements, questioning the government’s efforts to address the worsening security situation.
The confrontation reportedly reflected growing dissatisfaction among residents who have endured recurring violence and continue to fear for their safety.
Although the deputy governor’s visit was intended to demonstrate the government’s concern for affected residents, the youths reportedly used the opportunity to express their grievances and demand stronger measures to protect their communities from armed groups.
Bakatsine also reported that security personnel accompanying the deputy governor fled as tensions escalated, allegedly abandoning their vehicle.
However, details surrounding the incident remain unclear, as information about possible injuries, the circumstances of the security personnel’s reported withdrawal and whether the deputy governor completed his visit was not immediately available.
The full sequence of events and the specific demands made by the protesting youths have also not been independently established.
Zamfara State, in north-western Nigeria, has suffered repeated attacks by armed bandit groups, resulting in killings, kidnappings, raids on rural communities and assaults on travellers.
The persistent violence has disrupted farming and other economic activities, displaced residents and restricted movement in several communities across the state.
The reported confrontation highlights growing public frustration over the security crisis and mounting pressure on government authorities to take more effective action to protect lives and property.
