Former Barcelona and Spanish midfielder Andrés Iniesta is set to retire from football after hinting at the development on his social media page.
In the caption, he wrote: “COMING SOON. 8, 10, 24,” referring to the day he is set to announce his retirement from the sport, with the number eight being synonymous with his shirt number.
Iniesta, who famously played for Barcelona where he began his senior career, was with the Catalan club from 2002 to 2018. In 2018, he joined the Japanese club Vissel Kobe, where he played until 2023. He then moved to Emirates Club in the UAE but did not receive a contract extension after the end of last season.
So far, the 40-year-old has made 1,016 appearances, scored 10 goals, and provided 191 assists. Described as one of the most decorated players of all time, Iniesta has won 35 trophies for both club and country.
