Anambra Vigilante Office Attack: Police Vow to Hunt Down Perpetrators

The Anambra State Police Command on Monday, vowed to fish out gunmen who attacked the State Vigilante Office at Amichi in Nnewi South Council Area of the state last week.

The gunmen who invaded the facility in their numbers had set a building at the place as well as a vigilante operative they met in one of the cars in the premises ablaze while shooting sporadically.

Amichi and some other communities in Nnewi South LGA including Ukpor, Osumenyi, Unubi, and others, have been terrorized by gunmen, who came from the forests of the communities that border Ihiala LGA.

Although the threat has come down in recent times, many families have fled their homes for fear of attacks

Our correspondent gathered that operatives of the Amichi vigilante and those of nearby communities have been key to bursting some of the criminals’ hideouts, which many suspected angered the gunmen who came for the attack.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga said the State Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has condemned the attack and condoled with the town and people on the loss of a vigilante operative during the attack.

He gave the CP’s assurance to the people of the State that no stone will be left unturned in hunting down the gunmen who attacked and burnt the Vigilante Office in Amichi.

He said; “The CP has disclosed that effort is ongoing to identify and smash the gang behind the attack.

“CP Aderemi also commends vigilante groups across the State for their commitment to the protection of the citizenry and assures that the Police would do all within its powers to protect them.

“He has also directed Police Tactical Teams and Special Forces across the State to respond promptly to all distress calls from vigilante groups anytime they come under attack.

“While praying for the repose of the soul of the vigilante operative who lost his life in the attack, CP assured that his death will not be in vain.”
