Anambra to Finally Get Elected LG Officials as ANSIEC Announces Date for LG Polls

The Anambra State Local Government Council Elections have been slated to be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

This would be the first LGA elections in the state since 2014 when the exercise was last conducted, a development that has led to agitation from various stakeholders in the state.

In a statement obtained on Monday by TNC, and signed by the Anambra State Chief Electoral Officer, Genevieve C. Osakwe, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) informed all registered Political Parties and the general public that Local Government Elections in the State will be held on Saturday, September 28.

According to the statement, the Election Timetable/Schedule of Activities and other details can be collected from the Headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

On the nearness of the date, Magistrate Osakwe, who noted the election is about 45 days from the date of the official release of the timetable, assured that the Commission was more than prepared and ready to give Anambra people the best local government elections ever.

Recall that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had on Tuesday, August 6, inaugurated the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), made up of Magistrate Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe as Chairman with Mrs. Bernadine Obande (FCA), Barrister Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh, and Mr. John Emeka Okeke as members.

At the inauguration, Soludo had tasked the Commission to set a date for Local Government Elections and oversee the organization and conduct of peaceful and transparent local government polls in Anambra State.

Soludo also stated that the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as well as the Anambra State Electoral Law explicitly mandated ANSIEC to conduct the Local Government Elections transparently and independently.

Governor Soludo then charged the members of ANSIEC to serve with honour and integrity in an exemplary way that will highlight the Anambra ethos as The Light of the Nation.
