Anambra Seeks Public’s Help to Reunite Rescued Mentally Challenged Girl with Family

The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has appealed to members of the public to help identify the family of a young girl who was rescued from an uncompleted building in Awka after allegedly enduring repeated sexual abuse and neglect.

The girl was rescued following a distress report from the area near St. Faith’s Anglican Church, UNIZIK Temporary Site, Awka, where she had reportedly been living without shelter.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry said the victim was found in a mentally unstable condition, and preliminary investigations revealed that she had allegedly been subjected to repeated molestation and sexual abuse by unidentified persons while staying in the abandoned building.

Mentally Challenged Girl

The statement noted that the girl is currently under the Ministry’s care, where she is receiving medical treatment, protection, and psychosocial support.

It added that efforts to establish her identity have so far been unsuccessful because her mental condition has made it impossible for her to provide information about her name, parents, relatives, or place of origin.

“The Ministry calls on community leaders, residents, religious organisations, and members of the public who may recognise the girl or have any useful information that could help trace her family to come forward.

“All information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality and acted upon promptly.

“Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare on 07068580385 or visit the Ministry’s office,” the statement said.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, safeguarding the rights of women and children, and ensuring that rescued victims receive the care, justice, and support they deserve.
