There are clear indications that Anambra state is gearing up for the conduct of the local government election, as the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo on Tuesday inaugurated the Members of Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).
The Commission is chaired by Magistrate Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe.
Other members of the Commission include Mrs. Bernardine Obande, Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh, and Mr. John Emeka Okeke.
The Commission is tasked with setting the date for local government elections and overseeing the organization and conduct of peaceful and transparent local government polls in Anambra state.
Recall that local government elections were last conducted in the state in 2014, at the end of the Peter Obi administration.
Soludo had during his inauguration on March 17, 2022, pledged to prioritize local government elections in the state, a move anticipated to invigorate grassroots democracy.
Inaugurating the ANSIEC members at the governor’s lodge, Amawbia today, Soludo said the inauguration was a fulfillment of his promise to the Anambra people.
Acknowledging that the process took quite a bit of time, the governor said it was necessary to ensure that things were done right.
“During my swearing-in, I made it very clear that as soon as we got all the institutions and structures in place, we were going to conduct local government elections.
“We took quite a while to put together the Anambra State Electoral Law and it is that law that created the ANSIEC which was inaugurated today.
“So, the rest of the job is in your hands and you need to get to work immediately.
“The people are expectant to hear you announce when you are ready to conduct local government elections.
“I think I have done my own part,” the governor concluded.
